Wilt
Bastinado
(Mushroom/CD)
Steve Burnett

Bastinado is the fabulously titled and long-awaited debut album from sweaty Irish punksters, Wilt. It's an album of unstoppable exuberance and vitality. Energy erupts from every track, all of which are potential singles such as the classic 3-minute blast of recent release 'Radio Disco'.

The drawback with Wilt, and of course there just HAS to be a drawback, is that they sound uncomfortably close to Sugar, identical in fact, with the perfect layered harmonies over slightly overproduced guitar driven power pop. Maybe it's accidental, but I wish that they had made an effort not to sound so alike: every vocal nuance and each jangly chord reeks of Bob Mould (and no that's not an STD). The fact that they do the whole power pop thing better than their heroes sadly gets lost in the whole 'Stars In Their Eyes' thing.

This is a great poppy punk album that will survive many a repeat playing, but please guys, more originality next time, eh?
